Chapter 5 - Martha Begged Her

Martha’s hands shook so violently that Claire almost pitied her.

Almost.

The older woman had once treated Claire like furniture.

Useful when quiet.

Embarrassing when emotional.

Disposable when inconvenient.

But weeks ago, Martha had come to Claire’s bedroom at midnight with a face stripped of elegance and begged her not to show Justin the old medical report.

Not yet.

Not during the divorce.

Not while Rachel was pregnant.

Not while the family image could still be preserved.

Claire had listened.

Not because Martha deserved mercy.

Because Claire had still been trying to protect Justin from a truth his own mother feared more than betrayal.

Now, standing inside the mahogany study, Claire understood mercy had only extended the lie.

Justin stepped toward Martha.

“You knew what was in that file.”

Martha covered her mouth.

Rachel whispered, “Don’t answer.”

Justin’s head snapped toward her.

“Why are you telling my mother not to answer?”

Rachel recoiled.

Claire folded her hands on top of the report.

The doctor’s language inside remained hidden.

The exact diagnosis remained undisclosed.

The biological truth around the twins stayed unnamed.

But the emotional math of the room was shifting.

Justin had come home with Rachel and the twins to prove Claire had lost.

Instead, he found Claire seated at his family desk, holding a report that made his mother tremble and Rachel panic.

He turned back to Claire.

“What did my mother beg you not to show me?”

Claire looked at Martha.

Martha’s tears fell harder.

The older woman shook her head.

“Please, Claire.”

Claire’s expression softened for one second.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition of a different kind of suffering.

Then she hardened again.

“You protected his pride longer than you protected his truth.”

Martha let out a broken breath.

Justin stared at his mother as if she had become a stranger.

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“She’s turning you against everyone.”

Claire looked at him.

“No. I’m letting everyone stand where they chose.”
