Chapter 6 - The Twins Sleep Through It

The twins slept through the confrontation.

That made the room feel even crueler.

Two newborns in matching carriers near the foyer, tiny faces relaxed, unaware that adults were using their existence like a weapon.

Claire looked at them once.

Her face did not harden toward them.

It never had.

That was another truth Justin had ignored.

Claire had never blamed the babies.

She had blamed the lie built around them.

Rachel followed Claire’s gaze and misread it.

“Don’t look at them like that.”

Claire turned slowly.

“Like what?”

Rachel’s lips trembled.

“Like they’re evidence.”

The word slipped out before Rachel could stop it.

Justin went still.

Martha closed her eyes.

Claire’s expression sharpened.

“Interesting choice.”

Rachel’s face drained.

Justin looked at her.

“Evidence of what?”

Rachel shook her head.

“No. That’s not what I meant.”

But it was too late.

The word evidence joined the report, the photographs, the divorce folder, and Martha’s fear.

Justin pulled his arm away from Rachel.

The movement was small.

Devastating.

Rachel noticed instantly.

Her eyes widened with panic.

“Justin.”

He did not look at her.

Claire lifted the sealed folder again.

“You wanted proof that leaving me was reasonable. That your betrayal had meaning. That Rachel gave you a future I couldn’t.”

Justin’s jaw tightened.

Claire stepped around the desk.

Every movement slow.

Precise.

“You never asked why your mother begged me to stay silent.”

Martha whispered, “I was trying to protect him.”

Claire looked at her.

“From what? The truth, or the consequences of not knowing it?”

Martha had no answer.

Rachel stepped back.

The photographs on the desk showed a smiling version of the story.
