Chapter 2 - Martha’s Broken Glass

The shattered champagne glass became the loudest thing in the foyer.
Pieces of crystal glittered across the marble floor, catching the chandelier light beneath Justin’s polished shoes.
Martha did not look at the glass.
She looked at the twins.
Her face carried no grandmotherly joy.
No softness.
No delighted surprise.
Only terror.
Justin saw it and felt anger rush through him because anger was easier than fear.
“Mother, what are you talking about?”
Martha’s lips trembled.
She looked toward the study again.
The double doors stood open now, revealing Claire behind the desk, calm and waiting.
Rachel grabbed Justin’s arm.
“She’s staging this,” she whispered. “She knew we were coming.”
Claire’s eyes moved to Rachel.
“I knew you would bring them here.”
Rachel’s face tightened.
The twins remained asleep in their carriers near the foyer, untouched and safe.
Justin stared at Claire as if seeing a stranger wearing his wife’s face.
Only yesterday, in his mind, she had been the broken woman he left behind.
The wife who signed the divorce papers in silence.
The woman who cried when he told her Rachel had given him what Claire never could.
Now Claire sat surrounded by folders, photographs, a laptop, a smartphone, and one unreadable surgical report that had drained the blood from Martha’s face.
Justin stepped toward the study.
Claire did not move.
Martha grabbed his sleeve.
“Justin, don’t.”
He looked down at her hand.
That frightened him more than the report.
His mother had never stopped him from confronting Claire.
She had encouraged him.
Corrected Claire.
Explained away his cruelty.
Now she was trying to keep him from reading a document.
Rachel’s nails dug into his other arm.
“Don’t let them make this about your mother.”
Claire stood fully behind the desk.
“No, Rachel. This was always about what everyone knew and what Justin refused to ask.”
Justin’s jaw clenched.
He looked at the photographs on the desk.
Hospital images.
Rachel smiling beside him.
The twins.
No readable details.
Just enough to remind him of the story he had chosen.
Then his eyes returned to the surgical report.
