Chapter 1 - The Makeup Bag on the Foyer Table

A bruised wife refuses to hide her husband’s abuse and shocks him and his mother with the powerful father he feared.
Julian pushed his key into the mansion lock with a satisfied smile.
Bright afternoon sunlight washed over the white stone entrance, the manicured garden, and the black double doors he believed Audrey would open in fear every time he returned.
Beside him, Eleanor adjusted her beige designer handbag and laughed softly.
Pearl earrings trembled beside her cruel smile.
Julian glanced toward the tall windows.
“She’ll cover the bruises and pretend she fell.”
Eleanor leaned closer as if enjoying a private joke.
“Then make her sign away the house before dessert.”
Julian twisted the key hard and threw both doors open.
Their laughter died at the threshold.
The foyer was silent.
The chandelier glowed above the marble floor.
The staircase stood empty.
The cream living room beyond the archway looked untouched.
On the foyer table sat Audrey’s makeup bag.
Open.
Unmoved.
Unused.
The concealer Julian had thrown at her that morning remained exactly where it had landed.
The closet door stood open nearby.
Empty.
Audrey’s suitcase was gone.
Julian’s smile collapsed.
Then the soft roll of wheels crossed the marble.
Audrey stepped from the living-room archway, barefoot, long dark hair loose and windblown, one eye darkened with a swollen bruise, a faint mark beneath her jaw.
She wore his white shirt open over pale-pink satin, but she did not look exposed.
She looked finished.
One hand held the handle of a black rolling suitcase.
The other held a concealed second phone, camera aimed directly at Julian and Eleanor.
“I left the makeup exactly where you threw it.”
Julian’s face twisted.
He charged toward her with both fists clenched.
Audrey stepped sideways.
Behind her, an older man sat calmly in an armchair.
Silver hair.
Dark charcoal suit.
Sharp eyes.
A sealed leather folder in his hands.
Julian froze as if the floor had vanished beneath him.
“Who the hell did you call?”
Audrey’s father rose slowly and placed the folder on the coffee table with a thunderous slap.
Two blurred uniformed men waited outside beyond the open entrance.

“Sit down, Julian. We are discussing evidence.”
