Chapter 7 - The Folder Opens an Inch

Audrey’s father placed the sealed leather folder on the coffee table.

The sound echoed through the cream living room and out into the marble foyer.

Julian stared at it.

Eleanor stared harder.

Audrey did not.

She already knew the folder mattered because Julian feared it.

That was enough.

Her father opened it only a few inches.

No documents were revealed.

No writing was shown.

No evidence was played.

But Julian staggered backward as if he had seen everything.

Audrey’s stomach tightened.

What did he think was inside?

Photos?

Messages?

Medical records?

A statement?

A deed?

A recording?

The possibilities frightened him more than certainty would have.

Eleanor clamped both hands over her mouth.

Her pearls shifted against her throat.

Julian’s voice cracked.

“You can’t use any of that.”

Audrey’s father paused.

His eyes lifted.

“I haven’t shown you anything.”

Julian froze.

The mistake hung in the foyer.

Audrey’s phone captured it.

Eleanor closed her eyes like she wanted to disappear.

The two blurred uniformed men outside remained still beyond the open entrance.

No badges clear.

No names.

No agency.

Only presence.

Audrey’s father closed the folder halfway again.

Julian looked trapped between wanting to seize it and fearing what touching it would imply.

Audrey finally spoke.

“You knew there would be evidence.”

Julian’s face contorted.

“You’re my wife.”

The sentence was meant as ownership.

It sounded like confession.

Audrey’s father stepped between them fully.

“Not a possession.”

Julian’s eyes flashed.

But again, he controlled himself.

Again, only because witnesses existed.

Audrey saw it.

So did the camera.
