Chapter 9 - Audrey Does Not Flinch

Julian took one step toward Audrey.
Not a lunge now.
A test.
Would she retreat?
Would her shoulders fold?
Would she apologize for making things difficult?
Audrey stood still.
Barefoot on marble.
Bruised but upright.
Suitcase handle in one hand.
Phone in the other.
Her father stood slightly ahead of her, but not so far that he stole the moment.
This was Audrey’s choice.
That mattered.
Julian’s eyes searched her face for the old fear.
He found it.
Of course he did.
Fear does not vanish in an afternoon.
But beside the fear was something he had not seen before.
Decision.
Audrey looked directly at him.
“You told your mother I would cover it.”
Eleanor’s face tightened.
Julian’s jaw clenched.
Audrey continued, softer.
“You both laughed before you opened the door.”
His eyes widened.
The phone had not captured that.
But her memory had.
Not all evidence lived in devices.
Some lived in the moment a woman stopped doubting what she heard.
Julian looked toward her father.
“You’re turning her against me.”
Audrey answered before her father could.
“No. You arrived too late.”
Julian frowned.
She lifted the suitcase handle again.
“I was already gone.”
The words destroyed him more than accusation.
Because they were not legal.
Not financial.
Not dependent on the folder.
They were emotional fact.
Eleanor’s lips trembled.
“Families reconcile.”
Audrey looked at her.
“Families don’t schedule lunch around bruises.”
The foyer went silent.
Her father’s face did not change, but his eyes softened for half a second.
Julian stared at Audrey like he no longer recognized the woman he had expected to control.
Good.
May you like
She hoped he never did again.
