Chapter 5 - The Suitcase Beside the Door

The suitcase stood beside Audrey like a border.

On one side was the mansion.

The bedroom corridor.

The untouched makeup bag.

The closed rooms where Julian’s voice had sounded bigger because no one else heard it.

On the other side were the open doors, the garden, the daylight, and the blurred silhouettes waiting beyond the threshold.

Audrey kept her hand on the suitcase handle.

Not because she was leaving that second.

Because touching it reminded her she could.

Julian stared at the suitcase with hatred.

“What did you take?”

Audrey’s expression did not move.

“What was mine.”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“That depends on who owns this house.”

Audrey’s father’s gaze shifted toward her.

Eleanor instantly looked away.

The question of ownership stayed unanswered.

No decision.

No reveal.

No final consequence.

Only panic.

Julian stepped closer to Audrey’s father instead of Audrey.

A safer target, he thought.

A man could argue with another man.

A husband could reclaim authority by speaking over his wife.

But Audrey’s father did not give him that opening.

“Sit down,” he said.

Julian’s lips peeled back.

“You don’t order me in my own home.”

Audrey’s father looked toward the open doors.

Then back at Julian.

“Then stand and listen.”

The correction was quiet.

Humiliating.

Eleanor bent slowly to retrieve her handbag, but her hands shook so badly the clasp clicked against the marble.

Audrey’s phone caught the sound.

Julian noticed everything now.

Every movement.

Every camera.

Every silence.

Every possible witness.

That was what exposure did.

It made the powerful count all the things they had once ignored.

Audrey looked at him.

“You told me I would never walk out.”

Julian’s eyes snapped to hers.

She lifted her suitcase handle slightly.

“I walked to the foyer before you came home.”

His face tightened with grotesque panic.

Because he had missed the most important part.

May you like

She had already left him emotionally before the door opened.
