Chapter 4 - Eleanor’s Handbag Falls

Eleanor’s handbag slid from her shoulder.

It struck the marble with a soft, expensive thud.

For once, she did not bend to pick it up.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the leather folder.

Audrey watched her mother-in-law’s confidence drain in layers.

First the smile.

Then the posture.

Then the cruel brightness in her eyes.

Eleanor had entered expecting victory.

She had dressed for it.

Ivory blouse, black tailored trousers, pearl earrings, careful makeup, shoes sharp enough to click authority into every room.

She had believed Audrey would be upstairs trying to paint pain into invisibility.

Instead, Audrey stood in the foyer with visible bruises and a second phone.

And Audrey’s father stood beside a sealed folder.

Eleanor looked at Julian.

“What is in that?”

Julian’s jaw clenched.

“How would I know?”

But his voice betrayed him.

He knew enough to fear the possibilities.

Audrey’s father looked down at the dropped handbag.

Then back at Eleanor.

“You both came for lunch.”

Eleanor’s chin lifted weakly.

“Yes.”

“And a signature.”

No one moved.

Audrey’s eyes sharpened.

So that was not just her fear talking.

They really had planned it.

The house papers.

The ownership pressure.

The careful lunch invitation.

The bruise hidden beneath makeup.

A perfect afternoon lie.

Julian’s face reddened.

“You don’t know anything.”

Audrey’s father touched the folder with two fingers.

“I know enough to ask why your wife’s makeup bag is untouched.”

Eleanor flinched.

Audrey’s phone captured it.

Julian noticed and lunged half a step forward.

Then stopped.

The blurred men outside remained visible.

Audrey did not step back.

That stunned him.

He had built their marriage around the certainty that Audrey would always step back first.
