Chapter 2 - The Silent Mansion

The mansion had never sounded this silent.
Julian was used to control making noise.
Audrey’s careful steps.
Audrey’s quiet apologies.
Audrey opening drawers to find what he demanded.
Audrey lowering her voice whenever Eleanor entered the room.
Now there was none of that.
Only chandelier light over marble.
Only the security camera above the foyer watching without blinking.
Only Audrey standing beside her suitcase with her phone raised.
Eleanor stepped inside slowly, her handbag sliding lower on her shoulder.
Her eyes moved from Audrey’s bruised face to the untouched makeup bag, then to the seated man in the living room.
For one second, she looked genuinely confused.
As if she could not understand why the script had changed.
Audrey was supposed to cover the bruise.
Serve lunch.
Smile weakly.
Sign the documents Julian placed before her.
Pretend family privacy mattered more than pain.
Instead, Audrey had invited a witness.
Julian’s gaze snapped toward the hidden phone.
“You’re recording?”
Audrey did not answer.
The lens answered for her.
Her father stepped between them, not rushing, not shouting, not even lifting a hand.
That calm made Julian more frightened than anger would have.
Eleanor found her voice first.
“This is obscene,” she said. “Dragging outsiders into a private marriage.”
Audrey looked directly at her.
“Private?”
The word landed coldly.
Eleanor’s lips tightened.
Julian tried to recover his arrogance.
He straightened his white T-shirt, rolled his shoulders, and forced a sneer.
“This is my house.”
Audrey’s father’s eyes moved to him.
Not impressed.
Not surprised.
Only measuring.
Julian swallowed.
He hated that he swallowed.
Audrey rolled the suitcase one step closer to the door.
The sound of the wheels on marble cut through the room.
Julian’s panic sharpened.
“You’re not leaving with that.”
Audrey’s grip tightened on the suitcase handle.
“I already packed what matters.”
Eleanor’s eyes darted toward the bedroom corridor.
The empty closet suddenly meant more.
Not just clothes gone.
Control gone.
Julian looked at the leather folder on the coffee table.
Then at the blurred figures outside.
Then back at Audrey’s father.
The old man had not introduced himself.
He did not need to.
May you like
Julian already knew enough to be afraid.
