Chapter 8 - The Men Beyond the Door

The two uniformed men outside were blurred by daylight.
They stood beyond the open entrance near the front path, visible but unidentified.
They did not enter.
They did not speak.
They did not need to.
Their silhouettes turned the doorway into a line Julian no longer controlled.
He looked toward them again and again.
Audrey’s father watched him do it.
Eleanor whispered, “Julian, fix this.”
He turned on her.
“How?”
The question escaped raw and frightened.
For the first time, Eleanor had no instruction.
She had always instructed.
Cover the bruise.
Use lunch.
Get the signature.
Do not let her call anyone.
Make it private.
Move fast.
But now Audrey had moved first.
She had not covered the bruises.
She had not waited upstairs.
She had not hidden the phone.
She had not kept her father away.
Eleanor’s plan had arrived at an empty stage.
Audrey stood where the victim was never supposed to stand.
At the threshold.
With a suitcase.
With witnesses.
With evidence unseen but heavy enough to change everyone’s face.
Julian tried again to recover.
“We can talk without them.”
Audrey looked toward the doorway.
“No.”
The word was small.
Enough.
Julian recoiled like she had struck him.
Because no from Audrey had once been something he could grind down with voice, proximity, anger, and isolation.
Now no had structure around it.
Daylight.
Open doors.
A father.
Two silhouettes.
A camera.
Julian’s lips trembled.
Eleanor bent for her handbag at last, fingers fumbling against the handle.
Audrey’s father noticed.
“Leave it.”
Eleanor froze.
He did not explain why.
The handbag remained on the marble.
Audrey wondered what was inside.
Documents?
Keys?
A pen for the signature?
Something meant to help take the house?
The answer stayed hidden.

The suspense deepened.
