Chapter 3 - The Father in the Armchair

Audrey had not seen her father sit like that in years.

Still.

Composed.

Dangerous without movement.

He occupied the armchair in the cream living room as if he had been waiting there long before Julian returned.

The sealed leather folder rested across his lap.

His polished shoes were planted evenly on the rug.

His eyes never left Julian.

Audrey remembered calling him with a voice so broken she barely recognized herself.

She had not told him everything.

She could not.

Not then.

She had only said, “Dad, I need you to come before lunch.”

He had asked one question.

“Are you safe until I arrive?”

She had looked at the makeup bag Julian had thrown at her.

Looked at her swollen eye in the mirror.

Looked at the second phone she had hidden behind the guest towels.

Then she had said, “Only if you come fast.”

He came.

Now Julian stared at him like a nightmare had dressed itself in a suit and sat down in his living room.

Eleanor tried to laugh.

The sound cracked halfway.

“Surely this can be handled without theatrics.”

Audrey’s father lifted one hand toward the folder.

Eleanor stopped laughing.

Julian pointed at Audrey.

“She’s unstable.”

Audrey’s phone stayed steady.

Her bruised eye looked back at him from behind the lens.

“Say that again,” she said.

He did not.

The old habit failed under recording.

Audrey’s father stood.

The room seemed to shrink around Julian.

“Your wife is barefoot, bruised, packed, and recording. Choose your next sentence carefully.”

Julian’s nostrils flared.

He wanted to shout.

He wanted to lunge.

He wanted to grab the phone, slam the door, drag the house back into silence.

But the open entrance framed the two blurred uniformed men outside.

They did not enter.

They did not speak.

Their stillness kept Julian’s body locked in place.

Audrey saw his restraint and understood something painful.

He could control himself.

He simply had not believed she deserved it.

The truth struck harder than the bruise.
