Chapter 1 - The Garden Door

A cheating husband returns to an empty mansion and finds a sealed envelope proving his wife erased him before he knew she was gone.
Elena stood at the open garden doorway with Harrison pressed tightly against her chest.
Snow shone across the Connecticut estate outside, white and silent beneath winter daylight.
Behind her, the mansion looked perfect.
A crystal chandelier glowed over the marble foyer.
A dying fire breathed orange light into the living room.
A twelve-foot Christmas tree stood bare, stripped of ornaments, as if the holiday itself had been removed piece by piece.
Harrison’s small arms wrapped around Elena’s neck.
He did not understand everything.
But he understood urgency.
Elena bent her face close to his ear.
“Hold tight, sweetheart. We leave before he comes inside.”
Headlights swept across the snowy driveway.
Elena looked back one final time.
Not with hesitation.
With farewell.
She pulled the packed suitcase through the garden doorway, stepped into the cold, and disappeared beyond the glass.
At the front of the mansion, Julian Blackwood’s key entered the lock.
He pushed the door open with confidence, carrying an expensive travel bag and wearing a cream knit sweater that made him look like the husband in a winter advertisement.
“Elena? Harrison? Daddy’s home.”
No little footsteps came.
No small voice called out.
No wife appeared in the foyer.
Julian’s smile weakened.
The bare Christmas tree stood in the living room, dark and stripped.
He dropped his bag.

Then he ran.
