Chapter 2 - The Bare Christmas Tree

Julian crossed the living room like a man walking into a mistake he did not yet understand.
The bare tree filled the center of the room.
Only yesterday, in his mind, it had been full of glass ornaments, gold ribbon, white lights, and a silver star Elena loved more than she ever admitted.
Now every branch was empty.
Not messy.
Not forgotten.
Empty with purpose.
Julian grabbed the tree and shook it.
Dry needles scattered onto the polished floor.
Nothing else fell.
No ornaments.
No Harrison’s paper snowflake.
No family photograph frame.
No blue velvet ribbon Elena had tied around the middle because Harrison liked the color.
Julian’s breathing sharpened.
“Elena!”
His voice climbed through the mansion.
No answer.
He moved toward the staircase.
The warm chandelier light followed him up the polished steps, catching his luxury watch as his hand gripped the railing too hard.
At the nursery door, he stopped.
For one second, dread made him almost careful.
Then rage took over.
He threw the door open.
The nursery was empty.
The crib stood against the wall with no mattress.
The shelves were bare.
Tiny screw holes marked the places where pictures had once hung.
The rocking chair was gone.
The blue blanket was gone.
The toy train was gone.
Harrison’s room had not been abandoned.
It had been removed.
Julian’s face twisted.
“Where is my son?”
His voice crashed against the pale walls and returned with nothing.
He stepped deeper into the nursery, looking wildly around as if a two-year-old might be hiding inside the emptiness.
But Elena had left no confusion.
That was what frightened him.
Not chaos.

Precision.
