Chapter 5 - The Bracelet on the Desk
The diamond bracelet lay in the center of the desk.
Julian recognized it instantly.
He had bought it for Elena after Harrison was born, not as tenderness, but as strategy.
A beautiful apology.
A sparkling distraction.
A way to make questions feel ungrateful.
She had worn it twice.
Then it disappeared into a drawer.
Now it was back.
Not on her wrist.
On his desk.
Beside the cream envelope.
Beside the birth document.
Beside the fountain pen.
Julian picked up the bracelet.
His fingers closed around the diamonds.
They felt cold.
He stared at the birth document, but the writing was not readable from where he stood, and his eyes could not focus properly anyway.
He reached for the envelope.
His hand stopped before touching it.
Why would Elena leave it here?
Why not take everything?
Why leave exactly these objects arranged as if they were waiting for him to perform a ritual?
The phone in his hand buzzed.
Unknown number.
Julian answered too quickly.
A woman’s voice spoke through the line, calm and severe.
“Mr. Blackwood, this is Attorney Sarah Collins.”
Julian’s throat tightened.
“Where is my wife?”
Sarah did not answer that.
“Do not open that envelope until you understand what your wife discovered.”
The bracelet slipped across his knuckles.
Julian looked at the envelope again.
The seal was untouched.
