Chapter 4 - We Won’t Be Waiting

Julian played the message again.

Not because he needed to hear it.

Because he could not believe the tone.

“Safe travels, Julian. We won’t be waiting.”

No sobbing.

No accusation.

No begging.

No explanation.

Just a closed door in the shape of his wife’s voice.

He called again.

The call ended.

Again.

He tried a message.

Nothing.

He opened the family location app.

Harrison’s device was offline.

Elena’s was unavailable.

His jaw clenched.

He stormed back into the hallway, phone in one hand, breathing ragged.

The mansion seemed larger now.

Too large.

Too polished.

Too quiet.

In the foyer below, his travel bag still lay where he had dropped it.

Outside, winter light pressed against the windows.

Inside, the dying fireplace crackled once, then softened.

Julian moved from room to room.

Kitchen.

Sitting room.

Laundry area.

Guest suite.

Every space held signs of Elena’s removal.

Not destruction.

Withdrawal.

Harrison’s cup was gone.

His little shoes were gone.

The coat hook beside the garden entrance was empty.

Elena’s favorite scarf was gone.

Then Julian saw something from the hallway.

The door to his mahogany office was slightly open.

He stopped.

That room had always been his.

Elena never entered without asking.

His heartbeat changed.

Slowly, he walked toward it.

The office waited in warm chandelier light and dark polished wood.

On the desk, objects had been arranged with terrifying precision.

A cream envelope.

A diamond tennis bracelet.

An unreadable birth document.

A black fountain pen.

Julian froze.
