Chapter 3 - The Empty Wardrobe

Julian ran from the nursery to the master bedroom.
The hallway stretched behind him, showing the open nursery door like a wound.
He reached Elena’s wardrobe and tore it open.
Empty.
Every shelf.
Every hanger.
Every drawer.
Gone.
His own clothes remained perfectly arranged on the opposite side.
Cream sweaters.
Dark suits.
Tailored shirts.
Italian shoes lined beneath the cabinet.
His life was still there.
Hers had vanished.
That detail made his stomach drop.
Elena had not left in panic.
She had separated herself from him with surgical calm.
Julian ripped open drawer after drawer.
One drawer came loose and crashed onto the floor.
The sound echoed through the bedroom.
He looked at the empty drawer, then at the untouched side of the closet where his suits remained.
His hands began to shake.
He had imagined many versions of Elena discovering too much.
Tears.
Accusations.
Threats.
A dramatic confrontation in the foyer.
He had not imagined absence.
Absence gave him nothing to control.
No wrist to grab.
No face to charm.
No voice to interrupt.
No trembling wife to convince she had misunderstood.
He pulled out his phone and called her.
The call ended immediately.
No ringing.
No chance.
A prerecorded message began.
Elena’s voice entered the room, calm and final.
“Safe travels, Julian. We won’t be waiting.”
Julian stared at the empty side of the bed.
May you like
The phone nearly slipped from his hand.
