Chapter 9 - The Open Garden Door

A cold draft reached the office.

Julian turned.

Far down the hallway, through reflections and open angles, he could see the garden door still ajar.

Snowlight framed it.

Elena had left from there.

Not the front door.

Not the grand entrance.

Not the place a wife would use if she wanted to be seen leaving dramatically.

The garden door.

Quiet.

Practical.

Chosen.

He imagined her only as she had appeared moments ago in the same timeline of the house: Harrison against her chest, suitcase in hand, eyes fixed forward.

No flashback pulled him away.

Only the present evidence of departure remained.

The door.

The suitcase marks.

The cold air.

Sarah’s voice returned.

“Mr. Blackwood, step away from the desk.”

Julian looked at the envelope.

“What happens if I open it?”

A pause.

Then Sarah said, “You learn too little, too late, and damage the only chance you have to understand what comes next.”

His lips trembled.

That sounded like a threat.

Worse, it sounded like procedure.

Julian took one step back.

Then another.

His confidence had arrived at the mansion before him.

Now it was gone.

In its place stood dread.

Not because Elena had disappeared.

Because she had disappeared intelligently.

He looked toward the empty nursery again.

Then at the desk.

Then at his phone.

“What did she discover?” he whispered.

Sarah did not answer.

The envelope remained partly opened.

The secret remained inside.
