Chapter 8 - The Birth Document

Julian’s eyes returned to the birth document.
It sat partly beneath the envelope, its surface unreadable under the office light.
He could see only the shape of official paper.
A record.
A beginning.
A thing that could prove something without shouting.
His stomach tightened.
“What is the document?”
Sarah said, “Do not touch it again.”
Again.
He stared at his own fingerprints near the edge.
Had Elena placed it that way to see if he would move it?
Had Sarah known he would?
Had every object on the desk been positioned to measure him?
Julian looked toward the hallway.
The empty nursery remained visible beyond the office door.
The image struck harder now.
No mattress.
No toys.
No small socks in drawers.
The life he expected to return to had been carried out through the garden door while he was still certain he was wanted.
“Where is Harrison?” he demanded.
Sarah’s voice remained icy.
“Safe.”
The word made him furious because it did not include him.
“He is my son.”
“He is safe,” Sarah repeated.
Julian’s breathing became ragged.
He reached toward the envelope again.
“Tell me what she found.”
“No.”
He stopped.
Not because she had legal power in the room.
Because the envelope was starting to feel like a trap built from his own secrets.
Sarah continued.
“You will receive instructions when you stop trying to control the evidence.”
Evidence.
The word struck the office like thunder.
Julian looked at the bracelet.
The envelope.
The birth document.
The pen.
The empty hallway.

His reflection in the dark mahogany desk looked unfamiliar.
