Chapter 7 - The House Key in His Hand

Julian looked down and realized he was still holding his house key.

The key had opened the front door.

That was all.

It had not opened the truth.

It had not opened Elena’s location.

It had not opened Harrison’s whereabouts.

It had not opened the envelope.

It had opened a mansion emptied of the people who made it matter.

His fingers tightened around the key until the metal bit into his palm.

Sarah spoke again.

“Set the envelope down.”

He looked at it.

“I haven’t opened it.”

“You tore the edge.”

He froze.

Slowly, his eyes moved to the corner of the envelope.

He had opened it a fraction without realizing.

Julian looked around the office.

Camera?

No.

Maybe.

He did not know anymore.

The mansion he owned no longer felt loyal to him.

“Elena is watching me?”

Sarah did not answer.

That non-answer chilled him.

Julian stepped back from the desk.

The bracelet slipped from his fingers and landed softly beside the fountain pen.

He stared at it.

A gift returned.

A symbol stripped of romance.

A reminder that Elena had known how every apology had been used to close her mouth.

His phone trembled against his ear.

“Tell her to come home,” he said.

Sarah’s voice hardened.

“She already left home.”

The words landed with finality.

Julian’s lips parted.

No command came.
