Chapter 19 - THE CENTRAL TRUTHThe seven-year betrayal was not that Marcus had tricked me.
It was that my sister and I both let him turn our conflict into isolation.
Marcus lied to Sarah about me.
“He doesn’t want you.”
True enough after my ultimatum.
Then larger:
“He told people you’re unstable.”
False.
“He thinks Lily is mine and not worth knowing.”
False.
“He said never contact him.”
Not exactly.
Meanwhile Marcus told acquaintances Sarah had cut me off because I was controlling and cruel.
Partly true.
Useful.
He widened a crack I created.
Then stood in it for seven years.
Sarah hid my address because Marcus monitored her.
She still told Lily about me.
She still kept my old birthday cards.
I still kept Sarah’s number in my phone despite never calling.
The betrayal was not one forged document.
It was years of manipulated silence built on one sentence I had actually said.
Do not come back.
Marcus did not invent the door.
