Chapter 26 - THE HOUSE WITH THE LIGHTSTwo years later, Lily asked to see the route again.

Not during a blizzard.

Summer.

Blue sky.

Wildflowers.

We drove slowly from Sarah’s former neighborhood to my house.

She pointed.

“I went there.”

A cedar grove.

Then:

“I stopped there.”

Utility shed.

Then the hill.

When my glass house appeared through the trees, Lily became quiet.

“Was it this bright?”

“No.”

“What did it look like?”

She thought.

“Gold.”

The windows.

Warm interior against snow.

Gold.

At the porch, she stood where I first saw her.

Then looked down at her shoes.

Pink sneakers.

Warm.

Normal.

“Uncle Nathan?”

“Yes?”

“Did Mommy know you’d open the door?”

My throat tightened.

“I think she hoped.”

“Did you?”

“What?”

“Know I was coming?”

“No.”

She nodded.

Then:

“But you opened it.”

May you like

“Yes.”

That became the only part of the past I could answer without complication.
