Chapter 4 - MARCUS KANEI had hated Marcus before I had evidence worth hating.

Then I found evidence.

He met Sarah when she was twenty-six.

Charming.

Restoration contractor.

Good-looking.

Quick smile.

Too many stories about people who had supposedly cheated him.

Within six months, Sarah was engaged.

I checked him.

Not casually.

I hired an investigator.

That had been my first mistake.

Not because Marcus was clean.

He wasn’t.

Unpaid debts.

Two civil judgments.

A misdemeanor fraud conviction from years earlier.

A former business partner who accused him of taking deposits without completing work.

No violent felony history.

No proof he abused women.

Enough for me to decide I knew Sarah’s future.

I confronted her.

“You cannot marry him.”

Not:

I found these things. Please look.

Not:

I’m worried.

Cannot.

Sarah asked:

“Did you investigate my fiancé?”

“Yes.”

“You had no right.”

“He lied to you.”

“That doesn’t give you the right to run my life.”

“If you marry him, do not come back here.”

I can still see her face.

“You’re not Mom.”

Our parents were dead.

Car crash when Sarah was nineteen and I was twenty-eight.

I became protective.

Then controlling.

I told myself those were synonyms.

“You’re not Dad,” she said. “You’re my brother.”

“Then leave.”

She did.

Marcus married her three months later.

I expected her to come back within a year.

She did not.

Pride turned months into years.

Every birthday I almost called.

Every Christmas I told myself she had chosen.

I now understood that abusive men benefit enormously from relatives who mistake boundaries for exile.
