Chapter 6 - SARAH WAKESSarah opened her eyes on day three.

I was outside the room.
Not because she asked.
Because I was afraid.
A nurse came out.
“She’s awake and asking for Lily.”
I told her Lily was safe.
“Does she want me?”
The nurse paused.
“She asked whether you’re here.”
Not the same thing.
I entered.
Sarah looked tiny in the hospital bed.
Bandage around her head.
Left arm splinted.
Bruises along her jaw.
She stared at me for a long time.
I could not speak.
She did.
“You got them?”
My throat closed.
“Yes.”
“All three?”
“Yes.”
“Lily’s feet?”
“Improving. No major tissue loss expected.”
She cried.
Not loudly.
I moved closer.
Stopped before touching her.
“Can I?”
She nodded.
I took her hand.
Seven years disappeared again.
Then came back twice as heavy.
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Not now.”
I nodded.
Correct.
Apology could wait.
Information could not.
“Marcus is missing.”
Her eyes opened.
Fear.
“He’ll come.”
“Police are looking.”
May you like
“He always comes.”
The certainty in her voice scared me more than the bruises.
