Chapter 17 - THE VOICEMAILThe case turned on a voicemail Linda left Michael.

Not a confession.

Worse because it was ordinary.

Sent at 6:51 a.m. the morning Emma went to school.

“Michael, Emma had another rough night according to what you said. Bring her by before school and I’ll make the same drink. She cannot keep going to class wound up like that. Hannah turns every emotion into a diagnosis.”

Michael listened.

Did not delete it.

At 7:03, he texted:

Fine. Small amount. She has a math test.

Small amount.

I read those three words until the screen blurred.

His attorney argued:

Michael believed they were discussing herbal drops.

Possible.

Then another recovered message from six weeks earlier.

MICHAEL:

Whatever you used last time knocked her out.

LINDA:

She slept.

MICHAEL:

Too hard.

LINDA:

Then less next time.

MICHAEL:

Not when Hannah’s around.

That sentence changed everything.

Not:

Never again.

Not:

Do not give my child something unknown.

May you like

Not when Hannah’s around.

I stopped reading.
