Chapter 26 - THE FIRST UNSUPERVISED HOUREighteen months after the hospital, Michael earned one unsupervised hour with Emma.

Not because time passed.
Because professionals evaluated.
He completed treatment.
Followed orders.
Accepted responsibility without minimizing.
Emma requested it.
One hour.
Public library.
She was twelve.
I dropped her off.
Michael waited outside.
No hug forced.
He said:
“Hi, Em.”
“Hi.”
I said:
“I’ll be back at three.”
Emma rolled her eyes.
“I know clocks.”
Good.
I drove three blocks and parked.
Could not leave farther.
My hands shook.
At 3:00, Emma walked out carrying two books.
Michael behind her.
She got into my car.
“How was it?”
“Fine.”
“What did you do?”
“Books.”
“Did you talk?”
“Mom.”
“Right.”
Silence.
Then:
“He brought his own coffee.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She smiled slightly.
“I checked.”
Not funny.
May you like
But she was smiling.
So I did too.
