Chapter 25 - EMMA’S QUESTIONEmma was eleven when she asked:

“Did Grandma want me dead?”

We were driving home from therapy.

I almost pulled over.

“No.”

She looked out the window.

“You know?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she give it to me?”

“Because she believed making you calm was more important than asking whether what she used was safe.”

Emma frowned.

“That’s stupid.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad knew?”

“Yes.”

“He loved me.”

“Yes.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

Her face tightened.

“How can both?”

There are questions adults spend lifetimes avoiding because children ask them in six words.

“Love does not automatically make someone’s choices safe.”

Emma thought.

Then:

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Would you have stopped it?”

“Yes.”

“Is that why they didn’t tell you?”

“Yes.”

She cried.

I kept driving.

No speech could improve the moment.
