Chapter 10 - The Live Connection

The older man connected to the phone was not revealed.

His authority remained hidden.

Whether the baby survived was not shown.

Vanessa was not arrested.

No final consequences appeared.

The story ended inside the grand Greenwich mansion, beneath crystal chandeliers and cold storm reflections, with Evelyn Vale still on the marble floor, one hand against her pregnant belly and the other holding the phone high above her.

Her ivory maternity dress was stained in small, non-graphic marks near her lip and lower skirt.

Her eyes were wet.

Her breathing shook.

But her smile was faint, chilling, and unbroken.

Julian stood in front of her now, one arm extended, blocking Vanessa from reaching the phone. His face was torn apart by panic, guilt, and recognition.

Vanessa stood frozen in her black dress, pearl necklace trembling against her throat, her horrified face reflected in Evelyn’s phone screen.

Moments earlier, her recorded voice had filled the mansion.

“I put it in your tea myself. By tomorrow, there’ll be no baby.”

Now the playback had ended.

The live connection had begun.

No name appeared.

No face appeared.

No explanation came.

Only silence.

Celeste stood beside the shattered champagne glass, shaking uncontrollably, staring toward the mansion speakers as if the walls themselves had betrayed her.

The relatives remained frozen around the dinner tables, faces stretched with terror, too late to become innocent and too frightened to move.

Evelyn did not lower the phone.

Julian did not step aside.

Vanessa did not breathe.

And somewhere beyond the silent connection, someone unseen had heard enough to make the entire Vale family understand that the secret was no longer inside the mansion.

It had already left the room.
