Chapter 3 - The Teacup on the Monitor

The wall monitor did not show readable text.
Only blurred security imagery.
Enough to show a kitchen.
Enough to show Vanessa entering.
Enough to show her moving toward Evelyn’s teacup with a small container in her hand.
No label.
No substance.
No explanation.
Only motion.
Only intent.
Vanessa stared at the screen as if her own reflection had betrayed her.
“That could be anything,” she snapped.
Evelyn looked up from the marble floor.
Her face was pale. Her lips trembled. Her hand stayed locked around the phone.
“Then why are you scared?”
The relatives turned toward Vanessa.
Not fully.
Not bravely.
But enough.
Vanessa noticed.
Her face twisted with rage.
She lunged again.
Julian moved at the same time, but not toward Evelyn first. He moved toward Vanessa, catching the edge of her shoulder just enough to slow her.
“Stop.”
The word left his mouth before he knew he had chosen it.
Vanessa whipped toward him.
“You’re defending her?”
Julian looked at Evelyn.
She was on the floor, pregnant, stained, shaking, holding the only thing in the room that seemed to have courage.
Something in his face broke.
Celeste hissed, “Julian.”
His jaw tightened.
But he did not step back this time.
Evelyn pressed her thumb hard against the screen.
The security speakers filled the mansion with Vanessa’s recorded voice.
“I put it in your tea myself. By tomorrow, there’ll be no baby.”
The room shattered without anyone moving.
Celeste’s champagne glass fell from her hand and broke across the marble.
Vanessa’s face transformed from fury into grotesque terror.
Julian staggered backward, one hand flying to his mouth.
The relatives recoiled from Vanessa as if cruelty had suddenly become contagious.
Evelyn held the phone higher.
She did not smile yet.
May you like
She only watched them hear what she had survived.
Read Chapter 4 👉 Because the recording did not reveal the substance, but it revealed enough to destroy Vanessa’s confidence in front of the entire family.
