Chapter 7 - The Relatives Recoil

The Vale relatives had spent years mastering selective blindness.
They knew when to laugh.
When to look away.
When to call cruelty tradition.
When to mistake fear for loyalty.
Tonight, the recording stripped them of the privilege.
They had watched Evelyn stumble.
Watched Vanessa raise her heel.
Watched Julian freeze.
Watched Celeste forbid help.
Then heard Vanessa’s own voice spill from the mansion speakers.
Now they recoiled from Vanessa like strangers.
She saw it and panicked harder.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
No one answered.
One aunt clutched her pearls.
A cousin backed into a chair, sending it scraping loudly across the marble.
Another relative stared at the shattered champagne glass as if it might offer somewhere safer to look.
Evelyn’s phone remained raised.
Julian stood near her, not touching her.
The restraint mattered.
For once, he did not demand access to her pain.
He only blocked the person trying to reach her.
Vanessa pointed at Evelyn.
“She planned this!”
Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.
“I planned to survive dinner.”
The sentence silenced the room.
Even the storm outside seemed to pause against the windows.
The wall monitor continued showing the blurred kitchen image, frozen at the moment Vanessa approached the teacup.
No label.
No explanation.
No readable proof beyond motion and confession.
Enough.
The live connection made a faint static sound.
Everyone looked at the phone.
Then silence again.
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
Celeste gripped the back of a chair.
Julian whispered, “Who is on the call?”
Evelyn did not answer.
She did not look away from Vanessa.

Vanessa’s terror had already answered more than any name could.
