Chapter 8 - Evelyn Refuses Julian’s Hand

Julian knelt slightly and offered his hand again.
This time, slower.
Not entitled.
Not commanding.
Almost begging.
Evelyn looked at his hand.
Wedding ring.
Luxury watch.
Clean fingers.
The same hand that had not reached fast enough when Celeste glared.
The same hand that now shook because the truth had become public.
Evelyn did not take it.
Julian’s face crumpled.
Good, she thought.
Let him feel one unanswered plea.
Her body ached. Her dress was stained. Her lip hurt. Fear for the baby moved through her like cold water, but the prompt of her life refused to reveal survival, loss, outcome, or comfort.
Only the moment existed.
The marble beneath her.
The phone above her.
The family around her.
The live connection listening.
Vanessa shifted again.
Julian immediately straightened, arm out.
“Back up.”
Vanessa stared at him.
Her mouth trembled.
“You don’t know what she’s done.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Tell us.”
Vanessa froze.
The live call remained silent.
Celeste whispered, “Vanessa, no.”
That was enough to confirm there was more.
Evelyn held the phone steadier.
The chandelier light caught the cracked edge of the shattered champagne glass near Celeste’s shoe.
A distorted reflection of Evelyn’s raised hand shimmered inside it.
The mansion looked beautiful from every angle except the truth.
Julian looked toward the phone again.
The silent connection seemed to crush him.
He had no idea who was on the other side.
For once, neither did his mother.
Evelyn’s faint smile returned.
May you like
The kind of smile that says pain has not won yet.
