Chapter 9 - The Confession Repeats in Their Faces

The recording did not need to play again.

It had already branded itself across their faces.

Vanessa heard her own voice without the speakers.

I put it in your tea myself.

Celeste heard the line beneath every breath.

By tomorrow, there’ll be no baby.

Julian heard not only Vanessa’s words, but his own silence around them.

Evelyn watched each of them receive the damage differently.

Vanessa feared punishment.

Celeste feared scandal.

Julian feared himself.

The relatives feared being named as witnesses who did nothing.

And Evelyn?

Evelyn feared what she could not yet know.

She did not know whether the baby was safe.

She did not know who the silent caller had already heard before the connection tone.

She did not know whether the next minute would save her or destroy everything.

But she knew this:

Vanessa was no longer smiling.

Celeste was no longer commanding.

Julian was finally standing in the correct direction.

And the phone had not disconnected.

A faint, steady sound came through it.

Breathing, maybe.

Or simply an open line.

Vanessa stared at the device.

“Hang up,” she whispered.

Evelyn did not.

Celeste grabbed the edge of the dining table so hard the glasses trembled.

“Evelyn,” she said, voice breaking for the first time. “You do not understand who you’ve reached.”

Evelyn looked at her.

That was new.

Not who you called.

Who you reached.

The older man on the other end remained unnamed.

Unseen.

Unexplained.

But Celeste’s terror gave him shape.

Evelyn lifted the phone a little higher.
