Chapter 2 - Celeste Protects the Name

Celeste Vale had built her life around appearances.
The right chandeliers.
The right dinner settings.
The right son.
The right family portrait above the staircase.
And, in her opinion, the wrong daughter-in-law.
Evelyn had never fit the image Celeste wanted for Julian. She was too quiet when mocked, too observant when dismissed, too difficult to break completely. Worst of all, she had become pregnant before Celeste could fully remove her from the family circle.
Tonight was supposed to settle that.
The gathering had begun as a celebration.
Candles. White flowers. Champagne. Polite laughter. Family history framed in gold along the walls.
Then Evelyn had reached for the dinner teacup.
Then the room had started spinning.
Then Vanessa had stood.
Now Evelyn lay on the marble, clutching her abdomen, while Celeste’s first command had not been help.
It had been silence.
No ambulance.
Protect the Vale name.
Julian stood behind Evelyn, frozen in his navy suit, his face torn open by panic he refused to act on.
Evelyn saw him through blurred tears.
Her husband.
The man who had once promised, before everyone, that he would choose her above all others.
Tonight, he chose a glare from his mother.
Vanessa looked down at the phone in Evelyn’s hand.
“What did you do?”
Evelyn’s fingers trembled, but her grip stayed firm.
“I listened.”
The word struck harder than accusation.
Vanessa’s face twitched.
Celeste stepped forward.
“Give me that phone.”
Evelyn lifted it higher.
“No.”
The relatives recoiled at the word, as if refusal itself were dangerous in that house.
Julian finally moved, reaching toward Evelyn.
She turned her face away from his hand.
That stopped him more effectively than Celeste had.
For one terrible second, Julian realized Evelyn feared him less than she no longer trusted him.
The concealed smart-home speakers above the ballroom gave a faint click.
The chandeliers dimmed by a breath.
The wall-mounted monitor awakened.

Vanessa’s smile vanished.
