Chapter 6 - Celeste’s Command Breaks

Celeste tried to regain the room.

She had done it for decades.

One sharp sentence.

One icy look.

One reminder that the Vale name mattered more than anyone’s pain.

But the room no longer obeyed her.

The relatives would not meet her eyes.

Julian stood between Vanessa and Evelyn.

Vanessa shook in front of the phone.

And Evelyn, still on the marble floor, held control without rising.

Celeste pointed toward the monitor.

“That image proves nothing.”

The recorded confession had already proved too much.

Everyone knew it.

Celeste knew it too.

Her denial sounded old the moment she spoke.

Evelyn shifted slightly, one hand still gripping her abdomen. Her face tightened with pain, but she refused to lower the phone.

Julian glanced down.

“Evelyn, please, let me help you.”

She looked at him.

The silence between them held every second he had not helped.

He lowered his hand.

Not withdrawing.

Waiting.

That was all he deserved.

Vanessa’s heel clicked against the marble as she stepped backward.

The same jeweled heel that had pinned Evelyn’s sleeve now trembled.

Evelyn saw it.

So did the camera.

Celeste moved toward the phone.

Julian’s extended arm blocked her path.

His mother stared at him in disbelief.

“You would shame me for her?”

Julian’s face tightened.

“No. You did that yourself.”

A violent stillness gripped the foyer.

Celeste looked as if she might slap him, but she did not.

Too many witnesses now.

Too many systems awake.

Too many unknowns connected through Evelyn’s phone.

The silent live call remained active.

Vanessa whispered, “He heard it.”

No one knew who she meant.

But Celeste did.

Her knees nearly buckled.
