Chapter 4 - Julian Finally Moves

Julian had been raised inside commands.

His mother’s voice.

His family’s expectations.

The endless pressure of being a Vale.

He had mistaken obedience for loyalty for so long that when Evelyn fell, his body waited for permission before helping his own wife.

That truth reached him too late.

It reached him while Vanessa’s recorded confession echoed beneath the chandeliers.

I put it in your tea myself.

Julian’s eyes moved from the monitor to Evelyn.

She was still on the floor.

Still pregnant.

Still breathing too fast.

Still holding the phone like a weapon made of proof.

He took one step toward her.

Evelyn lifted one palm slightly.

Not to invite him.

To stop him.

Julian froze.

The gesture hurt more than shouting would have.

Vanessa saw it and laughed once, frantic and ugly.

“She’s using you.”

Evelyn’s gaze shifted to Vanessa.

“You said that after you tried to use my teacup.”

Vanessa’s lips parted.

No answer.

Celeste stepped into the center of the foyer, pearls shaking against her navy dress.

“This recording is private family material.”

One relative gasped.

Another looked down.

Evelyn’s eyes turned toward her mother-in-law.

“Private family material?”

Her voice was faint, but the room heard it.

Celeste’s face hardened.

“You do not understand what you are doing.”

Evelyn’s breathing shook.

“No. You don’t understand what I already did.”

The phone emitted a faint tone.

Not playback.

Connection.

Evelyn’s eyes flicked to the screen.

So did Vanessa’s.

A live call had activated.

No name appeared readable.

No face appeared.

Only an active connection.

Silence came from the other side.

But Vanessa recognized something about it.

Her body went rigid.

Celeste saw Vanessa’s expression and began shaking.
