Chapter 5 - Vanessa Recognizes the Silence

The live connection made no sound.
That was what terrified Vanessa.
No angry voice.
No question.
No demand.
No name.
Only silence.
But Vanessa stared at the phone as if the silence had a face.
Evelyn noticed.
So did Julian.
So did Celeste.
Vanessa’s throat moved.
“End it.”
Evelyn did not.
Her hand shook, but the phone remained high.
“Why?”
Vanessa’s eyes stretched impossibly wide.
“End it!”
Julian stepped fully between her and Evelyn now, one arm extended.
“Do not touch her.”
Vanessa recoiled as if he had struck her, though he had not.
“You chose her?”
Julian’s face twisted.
He looked down at Evelyn, then at the stain on her dress, then at the phone, then at the monitor still showing blurred kitchen footage.
“No,” he whispered.
The word was not answer enough for anyone.
Especially Evelyn.
Julian swallowed.
“I failed her.”
Celeste’s face went rigid.
“Julian, stop speaking.”
He looked at his mother.
For the first time all night, anger rose in him toward the person who had taught him not to move.
“You told them no ambulance.”
Celeste’s lips trembled.
“For the family.”
Evelyn’s laugh was almost silent.
Painful.
Broken.
Then gone.
The live connection continued.
Vanessa kept staring at the phone screen.
The relatives whispered behind the tables, but no one dared step closer.
One of them picked up a fallen champagne glass, then set it down again when it rattled too loudly.
The mansion speakers clicked once more.
Not playing.
Listening.
Evelyn finally smiled.
Faint.
Chilling.
She looked directly at Vanessa.
“You thought the confession ended when you stopped talking.”
May you like
Vanessa’s face drained.
