Claire Hayes sat at the end of the long dining table with her broken arm held carefully in a white sling.
The roast on her plate was untouched because she could not cut it.
Her left eye was bruised.
Her lips were pressed together.
Across the candlelit table, crystal wineglasses glittered beside white flowers and half-eaten plates, as if elegance could hide cruelty.
Victoria Hayes lifted her glass with a smug smile.
“My son finally put her in her place.”

Ethan sat behind Claire in his open-collar white shirt and charcoal jacket, watching her like he expected tears.
Claire’s phone lay hidden beside her uninjured hand, quietly recording.

Then the doorbell rang.

He stormed toward the foyer, but when he opened the door, Attorney Rebecca Cole stood outside with a sealed navy folder and two county officers.
Ethan tried to push past them.
The officers took controlled hold of his arms.
No shouting.
No violence.
Just a sudden end to his movement.
Claire remained seated as Attorney Cole entered the dining room and placed the folder beside her plate.
She opened it enough to show an official property document.
Then she looked directly at Ethan.
“Your name has never appeared on this deed.”
