Chapter 9

Rebecca did not explain everything.
That was what made Ethan panic.
If she had given him the whole structure, he could attack it.
If she had named every account, every deed clause, every trust protection, every signature, he could start calculating.
But she gave him only enough to understand he had been wrong.
“Your name has never appeared on this deed.”
“Financial documents you were never authorized to control.”
“Mrs. Hayes has legal standing.”
Each sentence was a locked door.
Ethan did not have the keys.
He looked toward his mother.
Victoria would not meet his eyes now.
That terrified him.
“Mother,” he said.
She swallowed.
“Ethan, I didn’t know—”
Rebecca’s eyebrow lifted slightly.
Claire saw it.
Ethan saw it too.
Victoria stopped speaking.
Natalie took a step away from the table, as if distance could remove her from the dinner she had helped create.
Ethan’s breathing grew shallow.
“What did my father do?”
Rebecca closed the folder fully.
“That is not being discussed tonight.”
“Then why are you here?”
“To stop you from using a false claim of ownership to intimidate my client.”
My client.
Not your wife.
Not Mrs. Hayes.
My client.
Claire lowered her eyes briefly.
The words felt strange and strong.
For years, Ethan had framed every conflict as private.
Marriage.
Family.
Home.
Now an attorney stood in his dining room and turned private cruelty into documented risk.
Ethan looked at the navy folder again.
Then at the phone.
Then at Claire’s sling.

At last, he saw the shape of the trap he had built for himself.
