Chapter 4

Victoria gave the toast after the main course.

She stood slowly, sparkling royal-blue gown shimmering beneath the chandelier light.

“To family order,” she said.

Natalie smiled.

Ethan leaned back, pleased.

Claire stared at her plate.

Victoria’s gaze settled on the sling.

“My son finally put her in her place.”

The sentence entered the room like poison poured into crystal.

No one corrected her.

No one gasped.

No one said Claire’s name with concern.

Ethan’s mouth curved slightly.

Natalie tilted her head.

“She forgot who makes the rules.”

Claire lifted her eyes then.

Only slightly.

Enough for Ethan to see she had heard every word.

He expected tears.

Maybe trembling.

Maybe another apology.

Instead, Claire smiled.

Small.

Controlled.

Wrong.

Ethan’s fingers tightened around his knife.

“What are you smiling at?”

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“You’ll see.”

Victoria lowered her glass.

“What does that mean?”

Before Claire could answer, the doorbell rang.

A firm sound.

Not a guest’s uncertain press.

Not a delivery.

A professional arrival.

Ethan looked toward the foyer.

Claire turned fully toward him.

“That is why I invited someone who knows who owns this house.”

The candles flickered.

Natalie’s smile vanished.

Victoria’s eyes sharpened with the first hint of fear.

Ethan pushed back from the table so hard his chair scraped the floor.

“What did you do?”

Claire did not answer.
