Chapter 7

Victoria recovered first because denial was her oldest luxury.

“This is some trick,” she said.

Rebecca turned slightly.

“No.”

Natalie pointed toward Claire.

“She manipulated something.”

Claire’s voice was quiet.

“I didn’t manipulate anything.”

Ethan pulled once against the officers, then stopped when their grip held.

“This house came through my family.”

Rebecca’s expression remained neutral.

“That is not what the deed history shows.”

“My father handled it.”

“Your father handled many things,” Rebecca said. “Not all of them the way you were told.”

Victoria’s face went pale.

There it was.

A crack in the older story.

Not enough to reveal everything.

Not enough to explain the full financial structure, trusts, family arrangements, protections, or hidden documents.

But enough to show that Ethan’s certainty had been inherited, not verified.

Claire watched Victoria’s hand shake against her chest.

For years, Victoria had walked through the mansion as if every chandelier owed her loyalty.

Now she looked at the walls as though they might testify against her.

Natalie’s voice sharpened.

“So who owns it?”

Rebecca did not answer.

Claire did not answer.

That silence was deliberate.

The night was not about giving them every key.

It was about taking one away.

Ethan stared at the folder.

“What else is in there?”

Rebecca looked at Claire before answering.

“Financial documents you were never authorized to control.”

Ethan’s breathing changed.

That phrase terrified him more than the deed.

Because the house was pride.

The documents were power.
