Chapter 3

Ethan loved the dining room.

It was where he performed power best.

A table long enough to make people feel seated beneath him.

Ornate gold chairs.

Candles.

Wine poured before anyone asked.

His mother at his right hand.

Natalie drifting around the room like a second verdict.

Claire was always placed where everyone could see her and no one had to protect her.

That night, Ethan insisted she attend dinner despite the sling.

“You’ve hidden upstairs long enough,” he said.

“My arm hurts.”

“Then don’t make everyone uncomfortable by mentioning it.”

Claire looked at him.

He smiled.

It was the kind of smile that warned her not to mistake politeness for mercy.

When she came downstairs in the dark-green dress, Victoria’s eyes moved first to the sling, then the bruise near Claire’s eye.

No concern.

Only irritation.

“You should have used more concealer.”

Claire did not answer.

Natalie gave a theatrical sigh.

“Honestly, Claire, the whole wounded-bird look is exhausting.”

Ethan pulled out a chair for Claire with exaggerated courtesy.

“Sit.”

She sat.

The first course arrived.

Claire could barely lift her fork.

Ethan watched her struggle for nearly a minute before saying, “Do you need someone to cut your food too?”

Natalie laughed.

Victoria lifted her wine.

That was when Claire moved her phone slightly closer to the centerpiece.

Recording.

Not for drama.

For proof.

Because Rebecca had warned her: cruelty spoken plainly in a room full of witnesses can matter later, even before anyone understands why.

Claire kept her eyes lowered.

She let them believe they were winning.
