Chapter 5

Ethan crossed the foyer like a man walking toward a servant he intended to dismiss.

He was still angry.

Still certain.

Still Ethan Hayes in the mansion he called his.

Then he opened the front door.

Attorney Rebecca Cole stood outside in a tailored black coat, silver-blonde hair pinned neatly, a sealed navy folder held against her cream suit.

Two county officers stood beside her.

Not aggressive.

Not theatrical.

Present.

That was enough.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What is this?”

Rebecca’s voice stayed calm.

“Mr. Hayes, I’m here to serve notice and speak with Mrs. Hayes.”

“You can speak to me.”

“I’m not here for you.”

He tried to step past her into the threshold, as if controlling the doorway might restore control of the night.

One officer lifted a hand.

“Sir, please remain inside.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“This is my home.”

Rebecca looked at him with professional stillness.

“No, Mr. Hayes. That is one of the issues.”

His anger spiked.

He moved again, faster this time.

The officers took controlled hold of his arms.

Not an arrest.

Not a fight.

Only restraint.

Ethan shouted toward the dining room.

“Claire, what did you do?”

Claire heard him from the table.

For the first time that evening, she breathed without feeling the room press against her ribs.

Victoria stood halfway from her chair.

Natalie stepped backward.

Rebecca entered the dining room with the folder.

The officers remained with Ethan, holding him just firmly enough that he could no longer use movement as a threat.

Claire did not stand.

Her arm hurt.

Her eye throbbed.

But she no longer needed to rise for the truth to reach him.
