Chapter 2

Claire had learned to eat quietly.
Not because she was timid.
Because in Ethan’s house, silence was survival.
He corrected the way she held a fork.
The way she smiled at guests.
The way she answered his mother.
The way she dressed.
The way she breathed after crying.
At first, he called it refinement.
“You married into a different level of family,” he said. “You have to learn how we do things.”
Victoria approved of that sentence.
Natalie repeated it with little variations.
“Our world has rules.”
“Claire doesn’t understand presentation.”
“Ethan is patient with her.”
Patient.
That was the word they used when Claire arrived at family dinners with long sleeves in summer, when she stopped answering old friends, when she flinched at sudden sounds and then apologized for being jumpy.
The broken arm changed something.
Not in them.
In her.
Ethan claimed she had slipped near the stairs.
Victoria said, “Accidents happen when women get dramatic.”
Natalie sent a laughing message: Try not to ruin dinner with another emergency.
Claire read it in the clinic waiting room while a nurse adjusted the sling.
That was the moment she stopped hoping they would become decent.
She called Attorney Rebecca Cole from the parking lot.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she needed the truth placed somewhere Ethan could not shout over it.
Rebecca listened without interruption.
Then asked one question.
“Are you still living in the Greenwich property?”
Claire looked at the mansion through her windshield.
“Yes.”
“Good,” Rebecca said. “Do not leave the house without speaking to me first.”
Claire almost laughed.
It was the first time in years someone had spoken about the house like Ethan was not the final authority over it.
Three days later, Claire invited Rebecca to dinner.
She did not tell Ethan.

She only placed her phone beside her plate and waited for his family to say exactly who they were.
