Chapter 8

Ethan tried to make Claire the villain.

Of course he did.

“You planned this,” he said, voice low and furious.

Claire looked at him.

“I protected myself.”

“You embarrassed me in front of my family.”

Victoria made a wounded sound.

Natalie nodded quickly.

Claire looked around the table.

The candles.

The flowers.

The plates.

The phone beside her hand still recording.

“You mocked my broken arm over dinner.”

Ethan’s eyes flicked toward the phone.

Too late.

Claire placed her uninjured hand lightly over it.

Rebecca noticed the movement but said nothing.

Ethan’s face went rigid.

“Is that recording?”

Claire did not answer.

Victoria whispered, “Claire, don’t be dramatic.”

Claire turned toward her mother-in-law.

“You said he put me in my place.”

Victoria’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Natalie looked down.

The room that had been so comfortable with Claire’s silence now feared her memory.

The officers remained calm behind Ethan.

One adjusted his stance.

No arrest.

No escalation.

Only boundaries.

Rebecca placed one hand on the folder.

“Mrs. Hayes has legal standing to request protection of the property and related records.”

Ethan laughed harshly.

“Protection from whom?”

Claire looked at him with her bruised eye, her injured arm, and the exhausted dignity of someone finally done pretending confusion was peace.

“From the person who thought hurting me made him the owner.”

Ethan’s anger surged, then stalled.

Because every person in the room heard the sentence.

And no one could make it sound like a misunderstanding anymore.
