Chapter 6

Rebecca placed the navy folder beside Claire’s plate.
Not in front of Ethan.
Not in front of Victoria.
Beside Claire.
That small choice changed the room.
For years, every official-looking document had been brought to Ethan first.
Bills.
Insurance papers.
Household contracts.
Investment updates.
Letters addressed to both husband and wife but opened by him before Claire saw them.
Tonight, the folder belonged beside Claire.
Ethan saw it and hated it.
“Do not open that at my table,” he said.
Rebecca looked at him.
“You do not control this table either.”
Victoria gasped softly.
Natalie whispered, “Excuse me?”
Rebecca opened the folder just enough to reveal an official property document without showing readable details to the room.
Then she turned toward Ethan.
“Your name has never appeared on this deed.”
The sentence struck harder than the doorbell.
Ethan stared.
His face moved through disbelief first.
Then rage.
Then fear.
“That’s impossible.”
Rebecca closed the folder halfway.
“It is documented.”
Victoria pressed one hand to her chest.
Natalie looked at Ethan as if he had failed to tell her which version of reality they were supposed to defend.
Claire sat very still.
Her tears were visible, but her face was steady.
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Claire, what did you sign?”
Rebecca answered before Claire could.
“She did not sign the property away. That is the point.”
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked at Claire then.
Really looked.
Not at the sling.
Not at the bruise.
At the woman he had spent years convincing himself had no power unless he gave it to her.

And something in his expression finally cracked.
