Chapter 3

Adrian loved the mansion because guests believed it was his.

He loved standing beneath the chandelier with investors and saying, “This place has history.”

He loved walking through the foyer as if marble could recognize a king.

He loved Celeste introducing him as “the man who restored the Vale estate.”

Claire never corrected them in public.

At first, because she was embarrassed.

Later, because Evelyn told her not to.

“Let him say it,” Evelyn said. “People reveal intent when they think the lie is accepted.”

So Claire let Adrian perform ownership.

Let him choose the cars in the circular driveway.

Let him order staff around.

Let him host dinners under her father’s chandelier.

Let Celeste sit at the long table and say Claire was lucky Adrian “kept her comfortable.”

Comfortable.

That word made Claire look down at the bruises on her wrist beneath long sleeves.

The house had not been comfortable in a long time.

It had become a stage where Adrian played master and Claire learned where to hide fear.

But beneath his performance, the original structure remained.

Her father’s trust.

Her father’s instructions.

Evelyn’s old signatures.

Records Adrian did not fully understand.

He thought possession was ownership.

He thought violence was authority.

He thought Claire’s silence meant surrender.

He never thought the house might still answer to her name.
