Chapter 8

Adrian tried to recover with volume.

Men like him often do.

“She’s unstable,” he shouted. “Look at her!”

Evelyn looked at Claire’s bruised cheek, split lip, torn dress, and trembling hands.

Then she looked back at Adrian.

“We are.”

That silenced him more effectively than an argument.

Celeste’s face collapsed further.

“Evelyn, this can be handled privately.”

Claire almost laughed.

Privately.

Private was where everything had happened.

Private threats.

Private pressure.

Private bruises.

Private documents.

Private corrections from Celeste about what kind of wife “keeps a house peaceful.”

Evelyn’s voice turned colder.

“Mrs. Vale, privacy ended when the emergency order activated.”

Celeste swallowed.

One officer knelt near Claire again.

This time, she accepted his support without letting go of her composure.

Adrian said, “You’ll destroy me.”

Claire looked at him.

“You did that before I stood up.”

No arrest was completed.

No final consequence was spoken.
