Chapter 9

The chandelier glittered above them like nothing terrible had ever happened beneath it.

Claire hated that.

Luxury hides too much.

Polished marble.

Formal doors.

Expensive silence.

People assume cruelty is uglier than it is.

Sometimes it wears a navy suit.

Sometimes it has a mother in black standing behind it.

Sometimes it lives in a Beverly Hills mansion and calls itself family.

Evelyn stepped beside Claire, not in front of her.

That mattered.

Protection without taking her voice.

“Claire,” Evelyn said quietly, “do you want medical support brought inside?”

Claire nodded once.

No diagnosis was given.

No outcome.

Just care beginning.

Adrian stared at them.

He had thought Claire had no one.

No staff loyal enough.

No documents strong enough.

No family structure left after her father died.

But Carter Protective Services had come through the open doors.

Evelyn had come with the case.

And Claire had come back into herself.

Celeste whispered, “This isn’t over.”

Claire turned toward her.

“No.”

Celeste looked relieved for a fraction of a second.

Then Claire continued.

“It’s finally recorded.”

Celeste’s relief vanished.
