Claire refused the officer’s first attempt to lift her.
Not because she did not need help.

Her legs shook.
Her ribs hurt.
Her cheek throbbed.
But she needed one moment standing under her own power before Adrian could be removed from the center of the room in everyone’s memory.
The officer paused respectfully.
Claire used the marble column to pull herself upright.

Adrian watched her rise.
His face twisted with disbelief, as if he had expected her to remain on the floor because that was where he had placed her.
Claire wiped blood from her lip.
Her hand trembled.

Celeste gasped.
Adrian’s eyes darted toward Evelyn.

Not because Claire wanted revenge.
Because her father had made sure no man like Adrian could steal the foundation beneath her life.
The team held Adrian in the blurred background.
Claire stood in the foreground.
