Chapter 5

The first officer moved like a wall.

Not reckless.

Not theatrical.

Controlled.

He caught Adrian before the kick landed and pulled him backward with enough force to stop him, not enough to turn the foyer into chaos.

Adrian cursed.

The officer did not answer.

Two more team members entered and took positions near the doors and staircase.

A fourth swept the room visually, keeping his weapon low and controlled.

Claire noticed that.

Even injured, she noticed professionalism.

No shouting.

No panic.

No wild movement.

They had come prepared.

Adrian struggled harder.

“Get your hands off me!”

The officer tightened his hold.

Claire pressed one bruised palm to the marble and lifted her head.

“You already gave them proof.”

Adrian stopped for half a second.

His eyes changed.

There it was.

Recognition.

Not guilt.

Fear of exposure.

He knew what he had said.

What he had signed.

What he had tried to force her to sign.

What Celeste had witnessed.

What he believed had disappeared.

Claire saw his face and understood Evelyn had been right.

The powerful fear proof more than pain.

Pain can be denied.
