Chapter 4

Celeste Vale had perfected cruelty with manners.

She did not shout unless servants were far away.

She smiled when she insulted Claire.

“My son has carried you long enough.”

“Women from families like yours rarely understand gratitude.”

“Bruises heal faster than scandal.”

That last sentence told Claire everything.

Celeste knew.

Not every detail, perhaps.

Not every night.

But enough.

Enough to look away.

Enough to warn Claire against embarrassment.

Enough to stand in the foyer during the final confrontation with a satisfied expression while Adrian towered over his injured wife.

Claire had crawled toward the entrance after Adrian discovered the emergency call signal.

He had found the old pendant Evelyn gave her.

Not the watch.

Not the hidden recording backup.

Just the pendant.

He thought that was the only alarm.

He laughed when he crushed it beneath his shoe.

Then he dragged her toward the foyer and said no one was coming.

Celeste stood near the staircase, arms folded.

“Claire, stop making this dramatic.”

Adrian raised his foot.

Claire heard the engine outside before he did.

Heavy vehicles.

More than one.

Then light poured through the open doors.

Not headlights from guests.

Not staff.

Carter Protective Services.
